Reverse Problem-Solving: Working Backwards to Create an Action Plan
What’s the easiest way to solve a maze?
If you’ve spent any time completing mazes, you probably know the answer: backwards.
What, then, is the easiest way to solve a problem?
Just like the maze, working backwards simplifies and accelerates the problem-solving process.
This is a process I often work through when coaching. When a client comes in, they often have a goal to achieve.
To begin this process, I ask them what that result looks like. They tell me.
Then I ask, ‘what has to happen right before that?’ They tell me again.
After a few repetitions, we’re at the starting point.
By working backwards, we’ve built a streamlined action plan.
Now the only thing left is to get started and do it!
