Alarm ringing, dreams receding. The day has begun. Do you have the motivation to get up? To accomplish the day’s tasks and keep moving forward?
I often don’t. More often than I like to admit, honestly.
Now, I can hear you: “Mateo, you run a business at 17! Don’t complain about lacking motivation!”
You’re right. I won’t complain. But I’ll share what I’ve learned and begun implementing.
No matter what you’re doing, getting started is often the hardest part, especially at the beginning of the day.
Too often, we treat motivation like a magical superpower. Some people wake up motivated and, for some reason, we don’t. There can’t be much we can do about it, right?
Wrong! We couldn’t be further from the truth.
Of the successful people I know, not one of them wakes up motivated every single day. Rather, they’ve all figured out how to build the motivation they need for success and impact.
The commonality between these people is ritual. No, I’m not talking about some weird practice you’d probably be uncomfortable with. I’m talking about creating routines that lead to success.
When my successful friends wake up, there’s a pattern they follow to create motivation. They’ve selected activities they complete each morning and they’ve built them into habits.
Rather than wake up and make a variety of decisions, like most of us do, they have a sequence they fall into. Within 1-2 conscious decisions, they’re ready for the day and feeling highly motivated.
The key to this process is dopamine. Dopamine, in short, is our brain’s pleasure chemical. It tells our brain, hey, I like that. Let’s do that again.
Every time we do something good—like completing a task—our brain releases a shot of dopamine. That bit of dopamine encourages us to complete another task, which releases dopamine yet again. Successful people capitalize on this process and develop morning routines.
Feeling motivated in the morning is simple: just start building routines! Complete a simple task, enjoy the dopamine, start the next task, repeat.
Slowly increase the difficulty and soon you’ll be knocking out major tasks! Follow this pattern most mornings and you'll develop a habit.
